Annual society dinner at the Cricketers. The theme this year was Black & White, and everyone looked smart having dressed appropriately. The food was excellent and plentiful once again, although the service was a little slow. As we have the room for the evening, perhaps they assume that we expect a long, leisurely meal. The dining-room is rather compact and 18/19 diners is really the maximum for comfort. It is a good evening so if you have never been to a dinner, get you name in early next year!
The Ockley Quiz. We fielded two teams as usual but with each one person short we started at a disadvantage! The "B" team got off to a good start and were equal third at the end of the third round before slumping to finish joint eighth, defeated by badly photocopied pictures of obscure architecture. Meanwhile the "A" team ("A" for Also ran) were strugling, not helped by an inaupiciously picked joker round. It would probably be kind to draw a veil over their final position, but it was two better than last year! (We're thinking of making it an entry requirement that you be good at quizzes!)
A skittles evening at the Grantley Arms, Wonersh against our opponents of old, Guildford Mountaineering Club. Sadly this event had to be cancelled due to lack of support.
The societies annual BBQ hosted again by Jane and Jim. Very much a repeat of last year, if you weren't there you missed an excellent occasion.

The Oakwood Hill Flower Show at which, for the umpteenth year running, members of the society manned the human fruit machine. Picture 1 (36kb). Picture 2 (41kb). It was also a successful recruitment exercise with a gratifying number of people indicating they would be joining us at the September social evening.

Social/recruitment evening at Ockley Village Hall. See announcement for background. A successful event, though the excellent icebreaker quiz/game devised by Yvonne perhaps over dominated. A number of newcomers attended expressing an interest in a wide range of the opportunities open and were made welcome.
Martin has chosen The Sleeping Beauty by Norman Robbins for our pantomime. The cast includes the King and Queen, Princess and Prince, Dame and Jester, Heralds and Fairies. The chorus will play Courtiers, Villagers, Royalty and Huntsmen. The read through and auditions (nothing scary!) will be held in Ockley Village Hall at 8pm. People of all ages are required, so please come along. If you've never been involved in a pantomime before, it's great fun. Yvonne & Bernard hosted another games evening. In one room Yvonne continued a long winning streak by coming first at "Therapy". In the other room Bernard could only manage a joint first at "Escape from Atlantis" but an outright win at "Labyrinth". Play was stopped in order to consume a variety of pizzas followed by ice cream. I would also mention the number of bottles emptied, but I totally lost track.... (not that I would want, in any way, to imply we're a boozy lot).
A small group went to see "Mother Goose", which Eric directed for the Ifield Barn. The highlight of the show was the fairy grotto and the most divine fairies, lots of audience participation and the community song "Teddy Bears Picnic" raised the roof and was enjoyed by all. Well done Eric.
